Welcome to the Key Curriculum Math Diagnostic Tests

Important: Please print this page before using diagnostic sheets, so you have instructions!  Each of the diagnostic sheet links below are pdf's that open in a separate window.  Print the diagnostic sheet(s) you need during this password-protected session.

How it works: The student completes as much as possible of each of the diagnostic sheets below.  Generally, Percents, Fractions, Decimals, and Measurements are for junior high (in that order) and Algebra and Geometry (in that order) are for high school.  Based on the diagnostic sheets, the appropriate Key workbooks can be used.  Approximately 3-4 workbooks equal a quarter's worth of subject work. It is not uncommon for high school students to have weaknesses in lower level math.  They should do all of the diagnostic sheets to ensure a solid foundation. It is important to assess a true ability while completing the worksheets so foundational gaps can be repaired.

SEA Students: Send us your diagnostic sheets, so we can include the appropriate workbooks in your curriculum for the year.  Non-SEA Students: Order the appropriate workbooks from www.aopstore.com. If a parent has the skills to score the worksheets and finds a worksheet is completed with high mastery, that particular workbook may be skipped.  You may also mail the worksheets to SEA, and we will score them for you and contact you to cover curriculum shipping details.  Please include a phone number or email address.

The Keys to Math series of workbooks are proven to successfully motivate students to succeed.  These self-paced, self-guided workbooks makes each subject easier to learn.  Minimal reading is required, so students can easily work independently or in small groups.

Diagnostic Sheets:

Open and print the appropriate pdf, then mail the completed worksheets to the address on the sheets.  You can also fax the sheets to 276-496-7979.  Please write your email address on the first sheet!   Please be careful not to coach, so an accurate evaluation can be made.

Strengthen Your Students' Mental Computation Skills

Key to Percents first emphasizes mental computation and estimation skills—because most work with percents is done without pencil and paper. Then students are taught to solve percent problems using equal fractions and decimal multiplication. Finally, percents are used to solve word problems in a variety of applications. Key to Percents assumes only a knowledge of fraction and decimal computation. Sample

Book 1 Percent Concepts

Book 2 Percents & Fractions

Book 3 Percents & Decimals

Review Fractions with Your Students

Do you have students who have never mastered fraction concepts or who need a good review?

Key to Fractions covers all topics from basic concepts to mixed numbers and is written with secondary

students in mind. Minimal reading is required, so students can easily work independently or in small

groups. These self-paced, self-guided workbooks motivate students to succeed.  Sample

Book 1 Fraction Concepts

Book 2 Multiplying & Dividing

Book 3 Adding & Subtracting

Book 4 Mixed Numbers

Build Students' Decimal Skills with Real-World Applications

Key to Decimals begins with basic concepts and operations on decimals. Then it covers real-world

uses of decimals in pricing, sports, metrics, calculators, and science. The success-oriented approach

of Key to Decimals builds confidence and independence. You'll find this series to be a great way to

prepare for standardized tests.  Sample

Book 2 Adding, Subtracting & Multiplying

Book 3 Dividing

Book 4 Using Decimals

Cover Measurement with Easy-to-Use Workbooks

Students using Key to Measurement enjoy a variety of hands-on experiences related to the English system of measurement. Group projects are included in addition to numerous individual activities. Book 1 teaches students how a linear measurement system is developed and then presents interesting and fun activities related to measuring length.  Book 2 focuses on length, perimeter, and area measures.  Book 3 develops the concept of area and introduces students to volume. Book 4 covers a variety of topics with students weighing objects, measuring capacity, and learning about temperature and time.  Sample

Book 1 English Units of Length

Book 2 Measuring Length & Perimeter Using English Units

Book 3 Finding Area & Volume Using English Units

Book 4 Metric Units for Mass, Capacity, Temperature, & Time

Introduce Your Students to Algebra in Simple Terms

Key to Algebra offers a unique, proven way to introduce algebra to your students. New concepts are explained in simple language, and examples are easy to follow. Word problems relate algebra to familiar situations, helping students understand abstract concepts. Students develop understanding by solving equations and inequalities intuitively before formal solutions are introduced.  Sample

Book 1 Operations on Integers

Book 2 Variables, Terms, & Expressions

Book 3 Equations

Book 4 Polynomials

Book 5 Rational Numbers

Book 6 Multiplying & Dividing Rational Expressions

Book 7 Graphs

Book 8 Graphs

Book 9 Systems of Equations

Book 10 Square Roots & Quadratic Equations

Ease Your Students Into Geometry

Key to Geometry offers a non-intimidating way to prepare students for formal geometry as they do step-by-step constructions. Students begin by drawing lines, bisecting angles, and reproducing segments using only a pencil, compass, and straightedge. Later they do sophisticated constructions involving more than a dozen steps and are prompted to form their own generalizations.  When they finish, students have been introduced to 134 geometric terms and are ready to tackle formal proofs.  Sample
